ROCK & BAROQUE MUSICAL PEACE PRAYER FOR VE-DAY

“Who says medieval and modern don’t mix?” 🙂

That was the opening line of my first recording of a blend of the famous Pachelbel and Beatles’ tunes (see “Hey Dude,” Aug 6, 2012). Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” had come to me just over a month before (see Jamming with Pachelbel: St Vitus Day 2012 Peace Offering, 6-28-12). Paul McCartney jogged my musical memory with an outstanding performance of “Hey Jude” at the opening of the London 2012 Olympics.

As I worked on Bach’s “Air on G-string” last week (renamed Bach for Philip Requiem for Saint Philip Day, May 1), the similarity between the three pieces was inescapable. Which is amazing, considering that nearly 300 years separate the three composers.  Elizabeth and I talked about it over dinner a week ago.

So this week, I decided to try to put it all together – Bach, Pachelbel and Paul McCartney – in a single recording made on my Clavinova.  Herren Bach and Pachelbel obliged by composing their “Air” and “Canon in D” pieces in the same key (D-major). But Paul wrote his “Hey Jude” in F-major.  Oh, well. The Beatles had to be different. 🙂 So I had to do a bit of finagling to try to fit them all together.

Here is now the product of this bit of musical alchemy – “Bach, Pachelbel & Beatles in Baroque Style.” Hopefully the result is no less sublime than the three individual pieces created nearly three centuries apart.

Please accept this as my musical Prayer for Peace on Earth, and join me with your own on this momentous VE Day (May 8).
