Enjoy some of the most beautiful places on Earth – my selections from God’s art gallery

by Bob Altzar Djurdjevic

In late January of this year, I was moved to create a film which featured some of the most beautiful places on Earth (see OUR BEAUTIFUL PLANET, Jan 24, 2015). I started with six photos. Four hours and 82 images later, I created that  short video, including some great music that befits the visual beauty.

Well, it’s happened again.  On May 20, I started looking at some pinterest.com shots and was quickly hooked again.  And it was like eye candy.  Soon I was high on sugar and beauty.

So this time, I will share with you my new selections from God’s Art Gallery gradually – a few images at the time.  So your art palate  doesn’t get too saturated and thus dulled by overabundance of beauty and colors.

Two months and 197 images later, here it is…

OUR BEAUTIFUL PLANET, 2nd Edition – Grand Finale – July 2015

Our Beautiful Planet, 2nd Edition – July 2015 – a film by Bob Altzar Djurdjevic – music by ALTZAR – July 15, 2015 [10:40 mins]

TO BE CONTINUED…

Instead of the usual selections of still shots from “OUR BEAUTIFUL PLANET” exhibit in God’s Art Gallery, for today – June 14, 2015 – here is a beautiful Yosemite slide show I received from my longtime friend Tom Prezkop in response to my post about our recent visit to the Zion National Park… (ZION NATIONAL PARK: MAJESTIC, MASSIVE).

“Hi Bob and Elizabeth,

Enjoyed the pictures of Zion NP. I am adding that to my list to visit. On May 13th to 18th, I was in Yosemite NP and look a few pictures which you can find here” – http://youtu.be/neJwBtFn99Y

Tom’s selection of music also fits the scenery beautifully.

JUNE SOLSTICE – June 21, 2015

June Solstice time

An Ancient Celebration

Celebrations surrounding the June Solstice have a time-honored history. In ancient times, the date of the June Solstice was used to organize calendars and as a marker to figure out when to plant and harvest crops. Traditionally, this time of year was also popular for weddings.

Stonehenge: An Ancient Calendar Organizing System?

Some historians point to the Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument in stonehenge-june-solsticeWiltshire, England as evidence of the fact that ancient humans used the June Solstice as a way to organize their calendars. Some believe that Stonehenge’s unique stone circle was erected around 2500 BCE in solstice-afp.jporder to establish the date of the Summer Solstice. Viewed from its center, the Sun rises at a particular point on the horizon on day of the June Solstice. Some theories suggest that the builders of Stonehenge may have used the solstice as a starting-point to count the days of the year.

Machu Picchu – Temple of the Sun

The Inca’s sacred relationship with the sun shines at Machu Picchu, a mountaintop citadel that is thought to have been built in the mid-1400s for the ruling elite. On the June solstice, which is winter in Peru, the sun pours through the central window in the Temple of the Sun and lights up a ceremonial stone. The Temple of the Three Windows in the site’s Sacred Plaza is positioned so that it faces the December solstice sunset.

June Solstice, Machu Picchu

At the spring and fall equinoxes, the sun lies directly over Intihuatana, the hitching post of the sun, so that it casts no shadow.

Celebrating Femininity in China

In ancient China, the summer solstice was observed by a ceremony to celebrate the Earth, femininity, and the “yin” forces. It complemented the Winter Solstice that celebrated the heavens, masculinity and “yang” forces. According to Chinese tradition, the shortest shadow is found on the day of the Summer Solstice.

Midsummer Feasts

In ancient Gaul, which encompasses modern-day France and some parts of its neighboring countries, the Midsummer celebration was called Feast of Epona. The celebration was named after a mare goddess who personified fertility and protected horses. In ancient Germanic, Slav and Celtic tribes, pagans celebrated Midsummer with bonfires. After Christianity spread in Europe and other parts of the world, many pagan customs were incorporated into the Christian religion. In parts of Scandinavia, the Midsummer celebration continued but was observed around the time of St John’s Day, on June 24, to honor St John the Baptist instead of the pagan gods.

Honoring the Sun

In North America, some Native American tribes held ritual dances toIMG_0932 honor the Sun. The Sioux were known to hold one of the most spectacular rituals. Preparations for the event included cutting and raising a tree that would be considered a visible connection between the heavens and Earth, and setting up teepees in a circle to represent the cosmos. Participants abstained from food and drink during the dance itself. Their bodies were decorated in the symbolic colors of red (sunset), blue (sky), yellow (lightning), white (light), and black (night).

Modern day celebrations

In northern European countries like Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, Midsummer is a festive celebration. When the summer days are at their longest, and in the north it is the time of the Midnight Sun, festivals generally celebrate the summer and the fertility of the Earth. In Sweden and many parts of Finland people dance around Maypoles. Bonfires are lit and homes are decorated with flower garlands, greenery, and tree branches.

Happy June Solstice! Happy Father’s Day!

It has now been exactly one month since I started sharing these images as part of Our Beautiful Planet, 2nd Edition.  So for a change of pace, on this June Solstice and Father’s Day both, here’s something a little different.

First, since a Solstice is all about the Sun and the Earth relationship, here are some images of a desert sunrise in the Scottsdale-Phoenix area…

This time, the scenes you are about to see below may cause you to say, ‘oh my gosh, is this really real?  Or is it an artist painting?”

And the answers are yes and yes.  Except that the artist is not a sentient being who paints with oil or acrylic.  It is  the Creator using the minerals, water, plants and light on a 3D canvas to express His artistry.  Thus these pictures are of both Earthly and Divine origins.

But then, this morning, as I was waking up, the music of sunrises, sunsets also came to me. First, from a famous 1960s musical – Fiddler on the Roof (also made into a film in 1971). Here’s a recording of it I made nearly 7 years ago now on my antique piano which I had brought with me earlier that year from Arizona to the Rainbow Shower in Maui.:

The cause of this special color is not some industrial accident at a Pepto-Bismal factory, but heavy rains stirring up a sediment called Argolite. When light gets reflected off of this mineral, the water turns into a beautiful pinkish-red, as seen in the photo of the river below the Cameron Falls (right). As befits a country whose flag is red and white. 🙂

Independence Day 2015. Only in words. Because we are no longer independent. We only have different oppressors now from those 239 years ago. Our new rulers have usurped our government and turned it against the American people.eagle-crest

All the while, we have had the Eagle, a symbol of freedom, as our idol, both in our crest and in our hearts. And just look where it got us.

AN AMERICAN HUMMINGBIRD

So on this Independence Day 2015,  how about we turn a new leaf, adopt a new idol, one which, like the eagle, symbolizes freedom and courage, but also beauty, grace and love: The Hummingbird.

Hummingbird US crestThe Hummingbird’s purpose in life is to travel great distances spreading love and life itself. So it stands for endurance and gentility. The Hummingbird never harms anyone.  So it also stands for peace.

Would’t that be a marvelous new role model for America?

Just think of how far we could get as a nation if we were to travel around the world doing good, spreading love and life?

The sky would be the limit. No. We could go right around the universe and back.

And now, while you contemplate that, here are some Hummingbird images for this Fourth of July.

Rainbow Hummingbird 1 Rainbow Hummingbird 2 Bee Hummingbird Hummingbird and flower

FROM LEFT TO TIGHT: 1. – 2. Rainbow Hummingbirds;  3. Bee Hummingbird, smallest bird in the world; 4. Spreading love and life;

SPIRITUAL MEANING OF HUMMINGBIRD: The hummingbird symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. It is the smallest of all birds. Hummingbird is the only creature able to stop dead in its tracks while traveling at full speed.  And it can also hover, like a helicopter, and fly in any direction, including backwards. Hummingbird symbolizes courage, determination and flexibility.

NOTE: The Rainbow Hummingbird (Siwa Kinti in Quechua) had been the power symbol of the Machu Picchu imperial court for centuries.
