55-YEAR OLD FLOYD CRAMER’S SONG I HAVE NEVER PLAYED BEFORE COMES TO ME IN DREAMTIME

Move over Guy Lombardo and your Auld Lang Syne. There is something special about Floyd Cramer and usherin the New Year.

Two years ago, the last song of 2013 is also the first piano tune I have ever recorded. I had been playing this Floyd Cramer piece for 50 years now (see FLOYD CRAMER JAZZ MUSIC FROM BOB’S PIANO BAR: LAST SONG OF 2013, Dec 31, 2013).

Last night, another Floyd Cramer piece came to me in dreamtime.  With full orchestration!  This tune, however, is one I have never played before. It was his first big hit which Cramer recorded 55 years ago (in 1960): “Last Date.”

After Elizabeth woke up, I started playing it, first on my Steinway, then on my Clavinova. Within half an hour I had it already recorded – piano, symphony strings + rhythm section with 6-8 beat. Like Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.
No sheet music, of course. So this version is not necessarily the same as that Floyd Cramer had written down, especially as I am also playing it in Variation 2 on a guitar, with piano as background.

So here you go, my first recording of 2016.. Floyd Cramer is back again:
